Unit 25

Assignment 1 (Part 1)

This assignment has required me to explain a list of different Internal system unit components as well as peripherals such as output devices, input devices and cables. Lastly I have also been required to explain backing storages which relates to performance, the types of the devices and the devices themselves.

Through the explanation of these components I also explained the use of the component and communication between other internal components too.

Below are the components which I have explained fully in this assignment;

Internal system unit components:

  • Processors
  • Motherboard
  • BIOS
  • Power Supply
  • Fan and heat sink cooling
  • Hard drive controllers (choose two of either SATA, PATA IDE and EIDE) *
  • Hard drive configuration (master and slave)
  • Ports (choose two of either USB, parallel or serial) *
  • Internal memory (choose two of either RAM, ROM or  L1/L2/L3 Cache) *
  • Specialised cards (choose two of either network or graphic cards) *

Peripherals

  • Output devices (choose two of either a monitor, printer or plotter) *
  • Input devices (choose two of either a camera or a scanner) *
  • Cabling (choose two of either coaxial, optical or twisted pair) *

Backing storage

  • Types (choose two of either disks, pen drives, optical media or flash memory cards) *
  • Portable and fixed drives
Performance factors (choose one of either data transfer rates or capacity)

Through completing this task I feel I have enhanced my knowledge of some components and gained new knowledge of others. As there was components which was on the least which I knew nothing about, this enabled me to conduct my own research to gain more knowledge of the component so I was able to complete the assignment correctly.

Part 2

This part of the assignment required me to create a presentation about operating system below is what was included within the presentation:

- Comparing two operating systems (Windows and Linux)
- Difference between command line operating systems and GUI operating systems
- Operating system function and services (Peripheral management and security management
- Device drivers
- Operating system features (Ability to customise and cost and support for user)

Within this presentation I was comparing and contrasting systems as well as explaining different functions and services. I learnt a lot through creating this presentation as I have stronger knowledge of these subjects than I did before I started.
